The Proud Spirit of the Peacock

The Mayura Raksha mask — “Mayura” meaning peacock — is one of the most colourful and admired designs in Sri Lanka’s traditional Raksha mask heritage.

This extra large traditional piece combines a powerful Raksha face, with wide eyes, bold features and carved teeth, with a crown of peacock forms rising above. Painted in shimmering peacock blue and green, it captures the beauty, pride and vibrant energy for which the peacock is celebrated.

A Symbol Rooted in Sri Lankan Tradition

Raksha masks have long appeared in southern Sri Lankan performances, processions and festivals, where each character carries its own meaning and personality.

The peacock holds special significance in Sri Lanka — it is honoured as the vehicle of God Kataragama (Skanda) and is widely associated with beauty, protection and good fortune. The Mayura Raksha brings these qualities together in one of the most decorative mask forms in the tradition.

Hand-Carved and Hand-Painted in Sri Lanka

This mask is individually hand-carved from lightweight Kaduru wood, the timber traditionally used by Sri Lankan mask makers.

Its deep sculptural carving gives dimension to the face and the layered peacock crown, while the hand-painted finish in blues, greens and accent colours, with fine painted linework, brings every feather and feature to life.

Because each piece is carved and painted by hand, subtle differences in carving, colour and linework are natural characteristics of the artwork.

A Collector’s Statement Piece

Measuring approximately 38 cm high, 43 cm wide and 18 cm deep and weighing around 1.2 kg, this is the largest Mayura Raksha in our collection — a commanding feature for an entrance, living room wall, office, studio or curated collection of world folk art.

Looking for something smaller? Explore our 10-inch Mayura Raksha mask and 8-inch Mayura Raksha mask, or pair this mask with our large Gini Raksha fire mask for a bold Raksha display.

Care Instructions

Dust gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Avoid water, chemical cleaning products, excessive humidity and prolonged direct sunlight.

Handle the mask by its central carved body — never by the peacock crown, projecting eyes or teeth. Recommended for indoor display.
