The Gini Raksha mask, also known as the Sri Lankan Fire Demon Mask, is one of the most recognisable designs within the country’s traditional Raksha mask heritage.
Its identity is expressed through a fierce red face surrounded by rising layers of carved flames. Large projecting eyes, a powerful open mouth and prominent fangs add to its dramatic character, while the vivid red, orange and golden-yellow palette creates the impression of heat, movement and living fire.
This large traditional design preserves the bold visual language for which Sri Lankan Raksha masks are known.
Raksha masks hold an important place within Sri Lanka’s southern mask-making heritage. Their dramatic characters, elaborate carving and vibrant colours have appeared in traditional performances, festivals and cultural processions.
The Gini Raksha is distinguished by the flame forms that rise above and spread around its face. These carefully arranged layers transform the mask into a sculptural representation of fire.
Today, the Gini Raksha is also appreciated as cultural wall art—a striking connection to Sri Lanka’s living artisan traditions and the generations of knowledge preserved by its mask carvers.
This Gini Raksha mask is individually hand-carved from lightweight Kaduru wood, a material traditionally used by Sri Lankan mask makers.
Its deep sculptural form gives dimension to the projecting eyes, rounded cheeks, open mouth and individually carved teeth. Multiple layers of flame-shaped carving surround the face, creating a wide silhouette with movement in every direction.
The mask is finished by hand in rich red, orange and golden-yellow tones, with black, ivory-white and fine painted linework defining the facial features and carved flame patterns.
Because each piece is made and painted by hand, subtle differences in carving, timber grain, colour, linework and surface finish are natural characteristics of the artwork.
Measuring approximately 45 cm wide, 35 cm high and 15 cm deep and weighing around 910 g, this large Gini Raksha mask has a commanding presence without overwhelming the surrounding space.
Its broad flame-shaped composition makes it ideal for a feature wall, entrance, living room, office, creative studio, restaurant or collection of international folk art.
Displayed on its own, it becomes an immediate focal point. When placed alongside other Sri Lankan masks or handcrafted objects, it contributes colour, cultural depth and a powerful sculptural character to the collection.
Dust gently with a clean, soft and dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Avoid water, chemical cleaning products, excessive humidity and prolonged direct sunlight.
Handle the mask by its central carved body. Do not lift or carry it by the narrow flame-shaped extensions, projecting eyes or teeth.
This painted wooden artwork is recommended for indoor display. If displayed in a sheltered outdoor setting, it must be fully protected from rain, moisture and prolonged direct sunlight.
Please note: This is an individually handcrafted artwork. Natural variations in timber grain, carving, paintwork, colour and surface finish are expected and contribute to its unique character.
