Where Serpent and Bird Meet

This Naga Raksha cobra mask is a hybrid design that blends the serpent imagery of the Naga Raksha with stylistic elements of the Gurulu, the mythical bird of Sri Lankan folklore.

The Naga Raksha is traditionally recognised by the hooded cobras that rise above and around its fierce face. In this hybrid interpretation, Gurulu-style features are woven into the design, creating a mask with its own distinctive character.

The Naga and the Gurulu in Sri Lankan Tradition

In Sri Lanka’s Raksha mask heritage, the Naga represents the serpent — a powerful, protective and sometimes fearsome force — while the Gurulu is the great bird that is traditionally its rival. Raksha masks featuring these characters have long appeared in southern Sri Lankan performances, processions and festivals.

Bringing the two together in one mask reflects the creativity of today’s Sri Lankan mask makers, who continue to evolve traditional forms while honouring their roots.

Hand-Carved and Hand-Painted in Sri Lanka

Each mask is carved by hand from lightweight Kaduru wood, the timber traditionally used for Sri Lankan masks, and painted by hand in bold traditional colours with fine linework on the face and serpent forms.

Because every piece is individually made, small differences in carving, colour and detail are natural and make each mask unique.

Size and Where to Display It

Standing approximately 20 cm high (8 inches), this medium mask suits a hallway, study, living room shelf wall, office or a gallery wall of smaller masks.

Care Instructions

Dust gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth or soft-bristled brush. Avoid water, chemical cleaning products, excessive humidity and prolonged direct sunlight. Handle by the central body of the mask, not the cobra heads or projecting details. Recommended for indoor display.
