The Gurulu Gini Raksha mask is a special handcrafted interpretation that brings together two powerful forms from Sri Lankan mask art: the bird-like character of Gurulu and the vivid flame-inspired design of the Gini Raksha, or Fire Mask.
Its sculpted beak, large expressive eyes and bird-like face establish the Gurulu character. Surrounding the face, layers of rising flame-shaped carving create the fiery energy associated with the Gini Raksha tradition.
Rather than reproducing one conventional mask design, this distinctive piece combines both visual identities in a single composition. The result is a dramatic artwork with a character entirely its own.
The mask is individually hand-carved from lightweight Kaduru wood, traditionally used by Sri Lankan mask artisans because it is well suited to detailed carving and wall display.
Its wide silhouette is formed by carefully carved flame-like extensions on both sides, while the tall central crown creates a strong sense of height and movement. Deep red, orange and golden-yellow tones dominate the design, complemented by black, ivory-white and subtle green detailing.
Each painted line follows the carved form, drawing attention to the layered flames, rounded eyes, patterned face and sculpted bird beak.
As every mask is carved and painted by hand, small differences in wood grain, linework, colour, carving and finish are natural characteristics of the artwork.
Measuring approximately 43 cm wide, 30 cm high and 12 cm deep and weighing only around 540 g, this mask has an impressive visual presence. Its wide flame-shaped composition makes it especially effective above a desk, console, entrance feature or as the focal point of a gallery wall.
It can bring colour, cultural character and handcrafted detail to a living room, office, studio, restaurant or collection of international folk art.
Although inspired by traditional Sri Lankan mask-making, its unusual Gurulu and Gini combination also gives it a bold contemporary personality.

Dust gently with a clean, soft and dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Avoid water, chemical cleaning products, excessive moisture and prolonged direct sunlight.
Handle the mask by its central carved body. Avoid lifting or carrying it by the narrow flame-shaped extensions.
This painted wooden artwork is recommended for indoor display. If placed in a sheltered outdoor area, protect it completely from rain, moisture and prolonged direct sunlight.
Please note: This is a handcrafted artwork. Natural variations in timber grain, carving, paintwork, colour and surface finish are expected and contribute to the individual character of the piece.
