A chemical-wash treatment creates contrasting black and pale tones across the carving, picking out the cobra hoods, serpent scales and the expressive face beneath. The aged, smoky effect gives this traditional design a modern, gallery-style edge.

The Naga Raksha Tradition

In Sri Lanka’s Raksha mask heritage, the Naga represents the serpent — a powerful and protective force. Naga Raksha masks, with their rising cobras, have long appeared in southern Sri Lankan performances, processions and festivals.

Hand-Carved in Sri Lanka

Each mask is carved by hand from lightweight Kaduru wood, the timber traditionally used for Sri Lankan masks, then finished with a chemical wash that produces its distinctive black-and-white tones. The finish reacts naturally with the wood, so the pattern and contrast are unique to every mask.

Care Instructions

Dust gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth or soft-bristled brush. Avoid water, chemical cleaning products, excessive humidity and prolonged direct sunlight. Handle by the centre of the mask, not the cobra heads. Recommended for indoor display.
