The Peacock in Sri Lankan Tradition

“Mayura” means peacock — a bird honoured in Sri Lanka as the vehicle of God Kataragama (Skanda) and associated with beauty, protection and good fortune. The Mayura Raksha is one of the most decorative characters in the country’s Raksha mask heritage.

Hand-Carved and Hand-Painted in Sri Lanka

Each mask is carved by hand from lightweight Kaduru wood, the timber traditionally used for Sri Lankan masks, and painted by hand with fine linework that highlights the eyes, face and peacock crown.

As every piece is individually made, small differences in carving, colour and painted detail are natural and make each mask unique.

Standing approximately 20 cm high (8 inches), this medium mask is perfect for a hallway, kitchen, study, bedroom, kids’ room or a gallery wall of smaller pieces.

Care Instructions

Dust gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth or soft-bristled brush. Avoid water, chemical cleaning products, excessive humidity and prolonged direct sunlight. Handle by the centre of the mask rather than the peacock crown. Recommended for indoor display.
