A Little Mask Full of Fire

This small Gurulu Gini Raksha mask brings together two powerful characters from Sri Lankan mask art in a compact 6-inch size: the flame-crowned Gini Raksha (Fire Mask) and the bird-like Gurulu.

Carved flame forms frame the face, while Gurulu-style features add a bird-like character. Finished in vivid reds with contrasting painted details, it captures the energy of its larger counterpart in a size that fits almost anywhere.

Rooted in the Raksha Tradition

Raksha masks have long been part of southern Sri Lanka’s performance and festival heritage. The Gini Raksha is known for its rising flames, while the Gurulu represents the great mythical bird of Sri Lankan folklore. Hybrid designs like this show how today’s mask makers continue to evolve these traditional forms.

Hand-Carved and Hand-Painted in Sri Lanka

Each mask is carved by hand from lightweight Kaduru wood, the timber traditionally used for Sri Lankan masks, and painted by hand with fine linework on the face and flames.

As every piece is individually made, small differences in carving, colour and detail are natural and make each mask unique.

Size and Where to Display It

Standing approximately 15 cm high (6 inches), it is ideal for a small wall, bookshelf, desk, kids’ room or a gallery wall of mini masks — and makes a colourful Christmas, Secret Santa or souvenir-style gift.

Care Instructions

Dust gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth or soft-bristled brush. Avoid water, chemical cleaning products, excessive humidity and prolonged direct sunlight. Handle by the centre of the mask rather than the flame tips. Recommended for indoor display.
