If you wander off the beaten path in Bentota, away from the glittering resorts and into the quiet shade of Yathramulla Road, you’ll find a place where art isn’t just a commodity—it’s a lifeline.
Sunflower Arts and Crafts isn’t your typical souvenir shop. It is a living workshop, a sanctuary of traditional workmanship, and the heartbeat of a community, all guided by the vision of its owner, Gamini Perera.
A Workshop of Raw Authenticity
Step inside, and the first thing you’ll notice isn’t the finished products, but the sound: the rhythmic tap-tap-tap of wooden mallets against steel chisels. Unlike the mass-produced, machine-cut items flooding global markets, everything at Sunflower is 100% handmade.
Visitors are invited ( in case you visit Sri Lanka) into the workshop to see the process from start to finish. You won’t find high-tech power tools here. Instead, you’ll see master artisans using basic, traditional tools—the same types used for generations. From the initial rough block of seasoned Kaduru wood to the final, vibrant coat of natural paint, the transparency of the craft is what makes this place special. You get to see the sweat, the focus, and the precision required to bring a Raksha mask or a 3D elephant to life.
Wow! What a great experience with authentic art in an equally beautiful artsy house.
We were greeted by the owner although the store was already closed and he happily opened it up for us. We got a tour and a story with no pressure to buy. And of course, got our souvenir and left very happy.
Ethical Artistry with a Purpose
What truly sets Sunflower Arts and Crafts apart is its ethical foundation. Gamini Perera has built more than a business; he has created a support system for local families.
Powering Local Families: The workshop provides stable, fair-wage employment to local artisans, keeping traditional skills alive in a world of automation.
Investing in the Future: Gamini is deeply committed to the community’s youth. A significant portion of the proceeds goes directly toward the education of local children, ensuring they have the supplies, fees, and support needed to thrive in school.
When you stand in the workshop and watch a carver at work, you aren’t just a tourist; you are a witness to a cycle of empowerment.

The BISO Connection: Growing Together
At BISO, we don’t just sell products; we curate stories of impact. We are proud to partner with workshops like Gamini’s because we believe that premium quality and ethical responsibility should go hand-in-hand.
Every time you purchase a BISO product—be it a precision-carved mask or a Mara wood sculpture—you are directly helping Sunflower Arts and Crafts grow. Your support allows Gamini to take on more apprentices, support more families, and send more children to school.
