Written in Fire: The Story of Luvi Arts, the Sri Lankan Pyrography Masters Behind Our Leopard Masterpiece

Some artworks are printed in seconds. Others are written in fire, one careful breath at a time. The hand-burned leopard hanging in our Handcrafted Wood Burning Art collection belongs firmly to the second kind — and the story of how it came to be is every bit as remarkable as the piece itself.

This is the story of Luvi Arts, a Sri Lankan family of pyrography masters, and the long journey their work takes from a workshop in Sri Lanka to a wall in an Australian home.

What Is Pyrography? Drawing With a Burning Iron

Pyrography — literally “writing with fire” — is one of the oldest decorative crafts known to humankind. Instead of paint, ink, or a laser, the artist uses a heated metal tip to scorch an image directly into timber. There is no undo button. A single slip of the hand, a moment of distraction, a fraction too long resting the iron in one place, and the wood is marked forever.

That unforgiving honesty is exactly what makes a genuine hand-burned piece so special. Every line you see was placed with intention, by a person, in real time. It cannot be mass-produced. It cannot be perfectly repeated. And it could never be made by a machine.

Meet Luvi Arts — A Family Etching Fire Into Wood

Luvi Arts is not a factory. It is a family. For more than 25 years, this Sri Lankan studio has devoted itself to the ancient craft of wood-burning, passing the skill carefully from one generation to the next. The founder, Lakshman Dissanayake — a university-trained artist and certified traditional artisan — works alongside Chamini Ranasinghe and their daughter Imandi Dissanayake, who now carries the family flame into a new generation.

In their own words, they don’t simply burn wood — they “ignite emotion, preserve culture, and craft legacies.” It is a philosophy you can feel the moment you stand in front of one of their pieces. Their work has travelled well beyond Sri Lanka, too; in 2025 Luvi Arts represented their craft at the China–South Asia Expo in Kunming, China, sharing this centuries-old tradition with an international audience.

How Hard Is It, Really? The Hours Behind a Single Leopard

It is easy to glance at a finished pyrography piece and underestimate the labour inside it. So let’s slow down and look closely.

• Every hair is a decision. A leopard’s coat is thousands of individual strokes. To make fur look soft and alive, the artist constantly adjusts the temperature of the iron and the pressure of the hand — hotter and slower for deep shadow, cooler and lighter for the pale belly fur. Get the balance wrong and the illusion collapses.
• The wood fights back. Timber is not a blank page. Its grain shifts direction, its density changes from one centimetre to the next, and a knot can grab the iron unexpectedly. A live-edge slab, with its raw natural border, is more beautiful — and far less predictable — than a flat manufactured board.
• There is no margin for error. Unlike paint, a burn cannot be wiped away. Hours of patient work can be undone by one careless second, which is why the artist must hold a steady hand and full concentration for the entire piece.
• Patience is the real material. A detailed, photorealistic portrait like our leopard is the product of long, unbroken hours hunched over the timber, building tone gradually from the palest sepia to the deepest near-black.

When you understand that, the price of a genuine handmade piece stops looking like a number and starts looking like what it really is: respect for a skilled human being’s time, training, and devotion.

Why “No Lasers” Actually Matters

The market is flooded with laser-engraved “wood art.” It’s fast, it’s cheap, and it’s identical a thousand times over. There is nothing wrong with that — but it is a different thing entirely from what Luvi Arts makes.

Our leopard is 100% hand-etched. No lasers. No inks. No shortcuts. By varying the heat of a simple soldering iron, the artist builds a rich, photographic spectrum of browns and blacks entirely by feel. The result is the warmth, depth, and faint imperfection that only a human hand can give — the very qualities that make people stop and look twice.

From a Sri Lankan Workshop to an Australian Wall

This is where the story comes home. A piece like this begins as a raw timber slab and the patient hands of a Sri Lankan family. It passes through hours of heat and concentration. And then it travels across the Indian Ocean to find its final chapter here — on a wall in an Australian living room, study, or hallway.

At BISO, that journey is the whole point. We partner directly with artisans like Luvi Arts so their craft reaches Australian homes without losing its soul along the way. When you bring one of these pieces home, you’re not just buying décor — you’re closing the loop on a story that started with fire and a steady hand half a world away, and giving a real artisan’s work the place it deserves.

It also happens to land beautifully within the Warm Minimalism and Biophilic Design trends shaping Australian interiors right now — the grounding warmth of natural timber, the quiet drama of wildlife art, and a genuine human story behind the object on your wall.

Bring the Leopard Home

This is a true one-of-a-kind piece — a single, hand-burned leopard on a natural live-edge timber slab, ready to hang, with a heavy-duty hanger included. Because it’s entirely handmade on natural wood, slight variations in grain, tone, and dimensions are part of its character; no two pieces will ever be exactly alike.

If this artist’s hard work speaks to you, head on over to BISO and give it a home.
